A walker made a surprising discovery on Thursday, April 9, near the customs path, close to the nose of Jobourg, in the Cotentin. Indeed, in the afternoon, he spotted a metallic object, characteristic of an old shell. He immediately alerted the authorities.

The marked trail for hikers

And the walker was right to be concerned. Quickly on the scene, the military confirmed that it was probably a device dating back to the Second World War, on this trail which had been affected by a fire last summer and is well known to hikers. The municipality has marked the trail, without completely prohibiting access to hikers. The demining services of Caen are expected to intervene soon to take charge of and secure the device.

A not exceptional discovery in the department

According to the authorities, this is probably a relic from the confrontations and coastal defenses that marked the peninsula of La Hague during the Second World War. This type of discovery remains occasional but not exceptional on the Manche coast, where several shells or old munitions have already been uncovered over the years, often due to erosion.
