Strasbourg’s hopes in Europa Conference League have been dampened after a 2-0 defeat in the first leg of the quarter-finals against Mainz. To reach the semi-finals for the first time in a European competition, Strasbourg will need to pull off a remarkable feat in front of their home crowd next week. They must win by three goals (or two to force extra time) against Mainz. The winner of this quarter-final will face either Rayo Vallecano or AEK Athens in the semis.

Strasbourg had been unbeaten away from home in previous matches, but Mainz capitalized on their mistakes on Thursday. Mainz, less than 200 kilometers away, punished Strasbourg with German counterattacks, showing more aggression in midfield.

Kaishu Sato opened the scoring in the 11th minute, followed by Stefan Posch’s goal in the 19th minute to give Mainz a comfortable lead. Despite Strasbourg’s efforts to regain footing in the second half, goalkeeper Mike Penders kept them in the game with crucial saves.

Strasbourg had their best chance late in the match when Valentin Barco hit the crossbar with a spectacular effort. The last half-hour may offer some hope for Strasbourg, but they will need a flawless performance at home to turn the tie in their favor.
