Eric Dier arrived at AS Monaco in May with his experience, power, and technical quality in defense. As a free agent from Bayern Munich, the central defender was seen as a good acquisition to stabilize a fragile and immature defense.
For the English international (49 caps, 3 goals), Monaco was a fantastic opportunity to reunite with the Three Lions for the World Cup, in case of a successful partnership. However, eleven months later, with only twelve matches played, the relationship has not lived up to expectations.
Questions about the physicality of Ligue 1 and his lack of speed were raised at press conferences, and Dier believed he would meet the standards in Monaco’s high-pressing style. Yet, injuries, including hamstring and calf issues, sidelined him for twenty-two matches.
Despite good performances from the Kehrer-Zakaria-Faes defense, Dier’s return in late March against Lyon (1-2) did not warrant a starting position due to his below-par performances. When he did play, his ratings, based on eleven matches, did not exceed 4/10.
Monaco never kept a clean sheet in the eleven matches Dier started. The team’s win rate dropped to 33% when he was on the field, with an average of 2.25 goals conceded per game.
Coach Sébastien Pocognoli discussed Dier’s frustrating season and emphasized the need for patience. While the coach did not rule out Dier’s potential in Ligue 1, he highlighted the current challenges.
As Dier supports his teammates from the bench, the disappointment in the locker room is balanced by admiration for his professionalism. With six matches left, AS Monaco fans hope Dier can redeem himself.
