Donald Trump agrees to temporary ceasefire with Iran

  • Donald Trump had promised to destroy Iran, but an agreement was finally reached on Tuesday night.
  • The ceasefire with Tehran is set to last for two weeks.
  • Why did the American president make this U-turn? Justine Jankowski, TF1-LCI correspondent in the United States, explains.

Surprise move at the White House. Before the end of his ultimatum, Donald Trump announced, on the night of Tuesday, April 7 to Wednesday, April 8, the implementation of a temporary ceasefire, lasting two weeks, between Washington and Tehran. The American president has therefore reversed his position, after promising to bring hell and destruction to Iran.

Justine Jankowski, TF1-LCI correspondent at the White House, discusses the reasons for this reversal. “There is pressure from public opinion because, as we know, the majority of Americans are against this war in Iran. And even though the president still has the support of most Republicans, he realizes that more and more young men, especially within his own party, are questioning what the United States is doing in Iran,” the journalist points out.

The midterm elections will also take place later this year in the United States. Additionally, the economic weight of this war in the Middle East may have played a role in Donald Trump’s decision. “Another reason that can explain this reversal is simply the financial pitfall represented by this intervention in Iran,” Justine Jankowski also notes on LCI.
