Artificial intelligence-generated fake country singers are becoming increasingly popular in the United States, a phenomenon currently limited to this genre that has regained popularity. Many of these AI-generated singers, such as Breaking Rust, Cain Walker, Aventhis, or Outlaw Gospel, share more than just the cowboy hat and leather jacket commonly seen in country singers. Their name, image, and songs have all been created by artificial intelligence, leading to multiple appearances on the American charts.
“It’s a phenomenon that I didn’t see coming,” admitted Jennie Hayes Kurtz of the country group Brother and The Hayes. “I thought AI would be used to eradicate cancer,” she added with a smile.
These songs often draw on the well-known image of the rugged, silent cowboy with a blunt yet truthful singing voice. Some musicians, like Kassie Jordan from the duo Blue Honey, express concerns about the authenticity and creativity behind these AI-generated songs.
Musicology professor Joe Bennett notes the striking similarities among these AI-generated singers, suggesting that the prompts provided to the AI assistant were not particularly detailed.
None of the producers of these synthetic artists contacted by AFP responded to the inquiries.
The rise of completely AI-generated music within a genre rooted deeply in human elements like folk, blues, and gospel poses questions about the direction of country music. Bennett believes that the emergence of modern country in the early 2000s provides some answers to this mystery.
With mainstream country music becoming more commercialized and influenced by pop music, the genre has seen a shift away from traditional cowboy imagery and musical styles. Contemporary country stars like Morgan Wallen and Zach Bryan have achieved significant success, indicating a changing landscape in the country music industry.
Critics argue that this simplified formula to attract a wider audience may lead to more superficial and easily replicable music. Bennett calls for better labeling of AI-generated content on streaming platforms to address this issue.
Despite concerns about the impact of AI on the country music scene, some industry professionals express optimism about a new wave of artists emerging with a traditional approach that focuses on emotion and authenticity, something that AI may find hard to replicate.
