The classic of the Champions League: Real Madrid and Bayern Munich ready for 29th and 30th encounter

It is the classic of the Champions League. For the 29th and 30th time in their history, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich will face off in the Champions League, in an ultra-anticipated quarter-final, with the first leg taking place at the Bernabeu on Tuesday, April 7th (9 PM).

This exceptional recurrence makes it the most frequently played fixture in the most prestigious of European competitions. While Real Madrid leads in the number of titles – 15 to Bayern’s six, the direct confrontation record is much more balanced. Out of 28 encounters, Real Madrid has won 13, with four draws and 11 victories for Bayern Munich. The two giants are also very close in terms of goals scored: 45 for the Spanish giant against 42 for the opposing side.

Real Madrid comes in with four consecutive victories

However, the recent dynamic is largely in favor of the Madrileños, who have emerged victorious in the last four double meetings. Since the cruel elimination suffered by Jose Mourinho’s team in the 2011-2012 semi-finals (2-1, 1-2 + 3-1 p), Real Madrid has not tasted defeat against Bayern, winning three semi-finals including the most recent, marked by the improbable double by Joselu in 2023-2024 (2-2, 2-1).

In the meantime, the Madrid club had overcome their legendary opponent twice under the guidance of Zinedine Zidane (2016-2017 and 2017-2018), while Carlo Ancelotti’s team strolled on the road to their Decima in 2014 (1-0, 4-0). Will Bayern finally manage to reverse the trend? The first answer will come on Tuesday night.
