The Junior Hokie Showcase at Virginia Tech connected local students to agriculture, science, and opportunities. Virginia Cooperative Extension Agent Morgan Paulette demonstrated drone techniques and safety with Pulaski County students and teachers.
For hundreds of fourth-grade students from the New River Valley, the event provided a hands-on look at agriculture, natural resources, science, and technology. Held at Virginia Tech’s Alphin-Stuart Livestock Teaching Arena, the 4-H Junior Hokie Showcase welcomed students from Pulaski, Floyd, Craig, and Montgomery counties for interactive learning.
Students rotated through various stations, encountering livestock, learning about modern farming technology like drones, and exploring wildlife science and natural resources. The showcase aimed to bring classroom subjects to life in a real-world setting, making academic concepts exciting and approachable for students.
The event also highlighted the importance of agriculture and natural resources industries and the opportunities they offer. Through hands-on experiences, students were encouraged to ask questions, explore new interests, and consider future paths in fields like animal science, engineering, technology, and education.
Junior Hokie Showcase not only provided a fun learning experience for students but also introduced them to the broader world of agriculture and natural resources. It may have sparked an interest or planted a seed for future career paths for some students.
