On Thursday, April 2nd, the Swedish government announced a budget of 794 million euros (8.7 billion Swedish crowns) for anti-aircraft defense, which is half of what was announced in January.

The Swedish defense minister emphasized the need to invest “more than ever” in anti-air defense capabilities, as drone attacks intensify between Russia and Ukraine, as well as in the Middle East.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte declared the need to increase anti-air defense capacities within the Alliance by over 400%, according to the Swedish minister speaking to AFP.

Sweden and Israel:

In 2025, trade relations between Sweden and Israel become strained, with Stockholm urging the EU to suspend the commercial section of its association agreement due to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Sweden is calling for increased economic pressure, showing a willingness to restrict exchanges, in contrast to the EU’s usual framework of economic cooperation.

Key Points of the Sweden-Israel trade:

– Appeal for suspension: Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson requested in July and August 2025 that the EU freeze commercial agreements with Israel. – Reasons: Sweden cites the humanitarian situation in Gaza and Israel’s failure to fulfill its obligations, calling for increased economic pressure. – Current framework: Trade traditionally operates under the 2000 EU-Israel Association Agreement covering various economic sectors. – Context: This position comes amid growing criticism in Sweden of Israeli policies, including those related to settlements. – Local actions: Protests in Sweden, including in Gothenburg, are pushing for more concrete actions against trade with Israel.

Despite these political calls, exchanges are currently governed by the EU-Israel agreement, but Sweden actively advocates for restrictive measures.
