On Saturday, April 4, American strikes targeted the Bushehr nuclear power plant located in southern Iran. While the facility was not hit, the International Atomic Energy Agency regretted this attempt, highlighting the danger of such an operation.
As a preview of Donald Trump’s threats, a nuclear power plant was targeted. The United States targeted the Bushehr nuclear plant, the only operational civilian nuclear facility in Iran. Although no damage was reported on the plant itself, this is the fourth time it has been targeted by bombings since the beginning of the war.
The International Atomic Energy Agency expressed its concerns. “Nuclear power plant sites or surrounding areas should never be attacked. The auxiliary buildings of the site may contain vital security equipment,” it emphasized on X, Saturday, April 4.
Russia also condemns these strikes. It had participated in the construction of the plant and had to evacuate its 198 employees on site, mainly technicians responsible for its operation. “The main wave of Rosatom’s employee evacuation from Iran began today as planned. Unfortunately, the likelihood of damage or a potential nuclear incident is increasing day by day, as this morning’s events have shown,” said Alexei Likhachev, director of the Russian nuclear agency Rosatom.
Meanwhile, other infrastructures have been bombed, such as a petrochemical plant in the southwest of the country. The capital, Tehran, was also targeted. Public facilities like a hospital were also hit.
