For several seasons, no NBA team uses more zone defense than Miami. Erik Spoelstra has clearly made it an important weapon in his arsenal. This season, Miami has had the highest number of defensive zone possessions in the league in 2025/26, with 575 possessions. Despite this, the coach remains critical of this option.
“There are times when I hate it,” he says. “Because sometimes there is no clear responsibility. Sometimes we have the mindset that the zone will help us get by and that we don’t need to work as hard. Nothing could be further from the truth.”
Spoelstra emphasizes that zone defense is not meant for resting or should not be seen as a way to hide. For it to be effective, intelligence and effort are required.
“In reality, we probably burn more calories in a zone than in individual defense. There are a lot of different movements to make,” he explains. “It is part of our defensive system, but it is not the only system. We are never better than in individual defense.”
When executed well, zone defense disrupts and stops attacks on a large scale. Kevin Durant and the Rockets experienced this during their game against Miami, facing the 46 possessions (his season record) where the Heat used this defense.
“No matter our defensive scheme, the goal is to make things difficult,” the coach analyzes. “Here, we were in the zone, controlled the spaces, and fought to contest shots near the rim.”
With 111.5 points allowed per 100 possessions, the Floridians have the fourth-best defense in the NBA, behind Oklahoma City, Detroit, and San Antonio. Whether he loves it a little, a lot, or not at all, Erik Spoelstra knows he is on the right track with the zone defense. The players also recognize this adjustment.
“It’s an excellent adjustment because we can surprise opponents and be effective with it,” says Davion Mitchell. “Especially against big scorers like Kevin Durant, who can change a game with their points. Putting a zone in front of them forces them to think.”
