At the heart of security issues in Europe, French land forces play a central role. “Our credibility is based on a simple yet demanding ability to be ready to act quickly, effectively, and always alongside our partners,” emphasizes Army Corps General Philippe de Montenon.
Two commands to prepare and engage forces
In order to meet these requirements, the Army relies on two complementary levels. The Land Force Command, based in Lille and consisting of 80,000 soldiers, prepares the units: it organizes their training, structures the forces, and ensures their readiness. On the other hand, the Land Command for Europe, established in 2024, has a different mission: to coordinate their engagement on the continent. It acts as a link with NATO and EU allies and structures.
East Flank: a concrete commitment
This organization directly translates into action on the ground. France is engaged on the Eastern flank of NATO, notably in Romania, where it acts as the framework nation, and in Estonia alongside British forces. “Being a framework nation means being able to command a multinational corps-level force within a NATO or European framework,” recalls the General. French forces also participate in Alliance reinforcement mechanisms, with units ready to be deployed quickly in a crisis.
ORION 26: preparing for a major conflict
The ORION 26 exercise marks a milestone in the transformation of the armed forces. Inter-service and inter-allied, it aims to prepare the forces for high-intensity engagement. During its final phase, staff and units will be tested in a realistic scenario, close to the conditions of a major conflict in Europe. “This exercise allows us to strengthen our interoperability and prepare for our key role,” emphasizes the General. The objective is to be able to deploy a complete army corps by 2030.
Adapting to new forms of combat
In the face of evolving conflicts, land forces are innovating. Drones, robotization, new communication methods: units are experimenting directly in the field. The challenge is to adapt to a “drone, digital” environment, inspired by experiences in Ukraine.
National service, a new role for the Army
Beyond operations, land forces will participate in the establishment of national service. They will welcome 1,800 young people starting in 2026. “We have defined positions and a training program with the aim that this first year is a success,” specifies the General. This commitment also helps strengthen the bond between the military and the Nation.
