“Are the United States still a democracy?”: Topic of a conference
On Tuesday, April 7th at 8:00 p.m., in the Pierre-Satgé Room, the League of Human Rights of Colomiers West Toulouse is organizing a conference on the theme: “One year of Trump’s presidency, are the United States still a democracy?”
“Donald Trump was inaugurated as President of the United States in January 2025,” remind the organizers of this conference. Since taking office for a second term, he has been working to deeply weaken the democratic system of the country, with the help of the Republican Party, Christian shareholders, and his supporters among the richest people in the world. The attacks are numerous and fierce: control over civil society, violation of voting rights, birthright citizenship questioned, law enforcement deployed massively in cities, unbridled oligarchs, multiple imperial wars, etc. One year after Trump took power, and six months before the midterm elections, it is time to assess the drift of this country towards an authoritarian regime.”
Michael Stambolis-Ruhstorfer, lecturer in American civilization at the Department of English-speaking worlds studies at the University of Toulouse-Jean Jaurès, a sociologist who has returned from a research trip to the United States, will provide his insights.
