The Finnish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Elina Valtonen, will visit Rabat on March 1st to meet with the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, as stated in a Helsinki press release. The discussions will focus on “bilateral relations and expanding trade relations between Finland and Morocco,” as well as current foreign policy and security issues including “the war in Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, and multilateral international cooperation.”
The meeting will also address “the situation in the Sahel and Sudan as well as the issue of the Sahara,” according to the provided information. The two ministers will explore collaboration opportunities regarding sensitive regional issues and multilateral efforts for stability and security. The Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that “Finland and Morocco have good bilateral relations that benefit both countries. There is significant potential to further expand our cooperation, particularly in trade and investment. Morocco is also a partner for the European Union.” The discussion is expected to clarify the economic and political cooperation between the two countries in an international context marked by security and geopolitical challenges.
In August 2024, Finland announced its support for the Moroccan autonomy plan as “a good basis for a settlement” of the regional Sahara dispute, stating that “Finland considers the text presented in 2007 [now updated] as a serious and credible contribution to the political process under the auspices of the United Nations,” reaffirming its commitment to a “political process towards a just and lasting solution.”
Helsinki’s stance aligns with the trend of international recognitions in recent years in favor of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and the autonomy plan proposed by Rabat, a movement consistently supported by King Mohammed VI on the diplomatic stage.
