Nicolas Maduro, the President of Venezuela, is said to spend his nights shouting from his cell in a Brooklyn jail. According to a lawyer representing a nearby detainee, Maduro cries out to let his country know that he has been held captive and mistreated. These revelations come ahead of Maduro’s second court appearance, scheduled for March 26.

During his initial court appearance in January, Maduro pleaded not guilty to four charges, including “narcoterrorism.” The upcoming preliminary hearing will focus on procedural issues before any substantive examination. Maduro’s lawyer, Barry Pollack, nicknamed “the Pitbull,” plans to request the dismissal of the indictment. The conditions of Maduro’s detention at the Metropolitan Detention Center, known for its unsanitary and poorly managed environment, have raised concerns.
