Camille Rast from Switzerland took the lead in the giant slalom in Are after the first run, while American Mikaela Shiffrin, the leader of the overall World Cup standings, made a big mistake that dropped her to a disappointing 12th place. This is the last giant slalom of the season before the finals scheduled for next week in Lillehammer.

Rast is ahead of Austrian Julia Scheib by 11 hundredths and American Paula Moltzan by 56 hundredths. German Emma Aicher is in sixth place, 1.26 seconds off the best time.

Mikaela Shiffrin, who was performing well on the first sections of the course, lost over two and a half seconds before the finish line. Despite this major mistake, she managed to keep her skis on the track and finished 2.29 seconds behind the leader. The second run is scheduled for 1:00 PM Paris time.

Camille Rast and Julia Scheib are locked in a tight battle for the crystal globe in the discipline. The Austrian currently has about a 100-point lead, but the Swiss skier is also in contention for the overall World Cup standings.
