A high-ranking official from the CPV’s visit to Cambodia strengthens political trust and multifaceted cooperation The visit from Trần Cẩm Tú, a member of the Politburo and permanent member of the Secretariat of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV), was held at the invitation of Samdech Say Chhum, Vice President of the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) and President of the Permanent Committee of the CPP Central Committee.

Vietnam and Cambodia have built a relationship based on solidarity, friendship, and a common history since establishing diplomatic relations on June 24, 1967. This bond was forged during struggles for national independence and strengthened during Cambodia’s victory over the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime, with support from Vietnamese soldiers and experts.

The leaders and people of both countries have continuously nurtured their neighborly and friendly relations. Vietnam has always valued its relationship with Cambodia and the solidarity among Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. Cambodia has supported friendship and cooperation between the two parties, governments, and peoples.

High-level meetings between the CPV and the CPP have become a key element of bilateral cooperation, contributing to enhancing political trust and guiding long-term Vietnam-Cambodia cooperation. The two countries also coordinate their actions in international, regional, and sub-regional forums, such as ASEAN, the UN, and Mekong, promoting peace, stability, and development in the region and global.

Economic, commercial, and investment cooperation has become a major focus of bilateral relations. Vietnam is currently the third-largest global trading partner of Cambodia and the largest within ASEAN. Bilateral trade has averaged about $10 billion annually in recent years, reaching $11.3 billion in 2025, with aspirations to increase bilateral trade to $20 billion in the near future.

Vietnam currently has 229 active projects in Cambodia, totaling over $2.94 billion, making it one of the top five foreign investors in the country. Vietnamese companies have played a significant role in Cambodia’s economic growth, job creation, and social contributions.

Tourism cooperation is also thriving, with over 700,000 Cambodians visiting Vietnam and over 1.22 million Vietnamese tourists visiting Cambodia in 2025.

Trần Cẩm Tú’s visit to Cambodia marks his first foreign trip since the CPV’s 14th National Congress and underscores Vietnam’s commitment to strengthening traditional friendship and cooperation with Cambodia.

According to Nguyễn Mạnh Cường, a member of the Party Central Committee and Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Trần Cẩm Tú’s ongoing official visit follows Secretary General Tô Lâm’s successful state visits to Laos and Cambodia in February 2026. This visit not only reflects the continuity of foreign policy but also demonstrates high-level commitments in concrete actions, injecting new momentum into Vietnam-Cambodia-Laos cooperation.

Thus, Trần Cẩm Tú’s visits to Laos and Cambodia are not only of diplomatic significance but also a crucial step in defining a new direction for Vietnam-Laos and Vietnam-Cambodia relations in the coming years. During this visit, both parties are expected to discuss the implementation of recent agreements, focusing on practical cooperation in areas such as connectivity infrastructure, border trade, education, and digital transformation.
