“The day [of Tuesday, April 7th] began with a warning from Donald Trump, stating that ‘an entire civilization’ – 90 million Iranians – was at risk of disappearing,” writes CNN on its website. “And it ended [in confusion], after hours of anxious waiting for the president’s next outburst, the whole world struggling to understand his erratic behavior.”
The Wall Street Journal publishes an account of the day when the world held its breath at Donald Trump’s threats against Iran and summarizes it as follows: “At 8:06 [local time] on Tuesday, the American president made the most radical ultimatum of his term and, “less than an hour and a half before the deadline, Trump finally backtracked and announced on his social network the conclusion of a two-week ceasefire with Iran, and the cancellation of the promised strikes, in exchange for the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.”
How did we get to this point? “While Trump was publicly threatening Iran with annihilation, diplomatic negotiations seemed to be taking place behind the scenes – although even sources close to the president did not know what to expect until the last moment,” reports Axios. The Pentagon and the US Joint Chiefs of Staff were preparing for massive airstrikes
