French Lack of Support in Iran Causes Strain with US
- French lack of support in Iran has created new tensions with the United States.
- Donald Trump wasted no time attacking French President personally, referencing the incident with the first lady.
- “Emmanuel Macron is mistreated by his wife,” declared the American president.
Donald Trump expressed annoyance at the French lack of support in the Iran war. As usual, he didn’t hesitate to taunt Emmanuel Macron, with a very personal jab at his counterpart during a private lunch, as seen in a video briefly posted on the White House YouTube channel: “His wife treats him very badly and he is barely recovering from taking that punch in the face. Emmanuel, we would appreciate some help in the Gulf (Persian).”
Things heat up between the two presidents. “Donald Trump is targeting France because France has a strong army. It is already on the ground,”
explains Christophe Barbier, LCI political editorialist. For its part, the Élysée Palace expressed “surprise at this message.”
“France has not changed its position since day one [of the conflict].”
“When a geopolitical dispute becomes a ‘guys’ story’, it’s worrying for the West,”
believes Christophe Barbier. And the still-blocked Strait of Hormuz could be a threat wielded by the Trump administration. “It’s not our problem. It’s France’s problem or the countries that will use the canal,”
stated the American president.

“Emmanuel Macron refuses to fall into this provocation and intervene earlier than planned in the Strait of Hormuz,”
recalls the editorialist. The head of state advocates “a return to stability and the reopening in good order, in a peaceful manner, in consultation with all stakeholders.”
