The American-Israeli attack on Iran marks the end of a taboo. For many years, the USA has refused to intervene despite their long-standing differences with Iran. The USA has historically fought Iran indirectly through sanctions, covert actions, cyber operations, and armed proxies. However, they have always avoided attacking the country.

The reluctance had a rationale: fear of Iranian retaliation, the risk of an oil shock, and above all, the realization that escalation is harder to stop than to start. What has changed is this alignment of planets, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Israel, who for four decades has been willing to confront Iran. Can we speak of a convergence of interests between Washington and Tel Aviv?

A risky military gamble for both Americans and Israelis.
