Several significant events have marked the news in France and internationally this weekend, especially on security and diplomatic grounds.

A terrorist attack was prevented on Friday night in front of the Parisian headquarters of Bank of America on Rue La Boétie. The main suspect, a minor, claims he was recruited via Snapchat for 600 euros to carry out the operation. The national antiterrorist prosecutor’s office has taken charge of the investigation, which has been entrusted to the criminal brigade and the DGSI. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez mentioned similarities with actions claimed by a group close to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, against the backdrop of tensions linked to the war in the Middle East.

During a visit to Monaco on Saturday, Pope Leon XIV paraded in the famous “popemobile” received by Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene for his first European visit. He delivered strong words from the balcony, criticizing the unjust power configurations and structures of sin that create gaps between the poor and the rich, privileged and rejected, friends and enemies. He emphasized the universal destination of talents, opportunities, and goods, echoing the social justice stance of Pope Francis.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced cooperation agreements with Gulf countries for defense and joint production chains during his Middle East trip. Zelensky mentioned signing agreements with Saudi Arabia and Qatar for 10 years and plans to sign one with the UAE as well.
