While US Secretary of State Marco Rubio promised that American military operations would cease within fifteen days, analysts remain perplexed.
A new announcement from the Trump administration came as the G7 summit of foreign ministers was held on March 27 at the Abbey of Vaux-de-Cernay in Yvelines. Amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio wanted to show confidence.
Speaking to a group of journalists, Rubio commented on the war in Iran, stating that it was “not a conflict that would drag on” and that American objectives would be achieved “over the next two weeks,” without necessarily deploying “troops on the ground.” This perspective differs significantly from that of regional specialists.
“There is no indication that real negotiations are taking place,” said political scientist Denis Lacorne, noting that there is little evidence to support the optimistic timeline put forth by the Trump administration regarding US operations in Iran.
In addition, many American objectives have not been achieved yet, especially the issue of enriched uranium. The complexities of extracting uranium from underground deposits pose significant challenges that may require specialized resources and infrastructure that are currently lacking.
Regarding the crucial issue of the Strait of Hormuz, Lacorne emphasized that Iranian leaders hold a position of strength and could use control over the strait to pressure the US government. Concerns also arise regarding the American public’s opposition to US intervention and President Trump’s reluctance to be perceived as capitulating.
Historian and political analyst Nicole Bacharan echoed these sentiments, highlighting the challenges Trump faces in navigating the conflict with Iran. She emphasized that Trump’s approach is unclear and may not align with public opinion or strategic goals.
As Trump grapples with the complexities of the conflict, uncertainties remain regarding his decision-making process and the influence of his advisors, some of whom lack expertise in the Middle East. The danger of further entanglement in the conflict looms large as Trump navigates a delicate balance between his promises, public opinion, and geopolitical realities.
