At the Paris Forum for Defense and Strategy, General Pierre Schill stated that “Europe has many advantages” to deter Moscow from engaging in armed conflict with the continent. While focus has recently been on the Middle East, a war continues to rage in Europe as Russia expands its influence in Ukraine, causing neighboring states to warn of the threat posed by its army to Europe in the short or medium term. Despite acknowledging the Russian threat as “structuring” and even “the main” threat, General Pierre Schill reassures that a war between Russia and European countries is not inevitable.
General Schill agrees that Russia poses a threat due to its imperial policies and powerful army, as seen in the large-scale invasion of Ukraine. However, he emphasizes that Europe has numerous strengths to counter this threat. As allies of Eastern European countries, they have promised to contribute to their defense if they are ever attacked. He points out that while the threat is real, it is not inevitable and can be prevented.
As the chief of the land forces, General Schill acknowledges the importance of Europe being “strong, determined, and credible” in facing Moscow. He contrasts this with General Fabien Mandon’s more alarmist speech in November, where it was suggested that France must be prepared to sacrifice in war. President Emmanuel Macron has also highlighted the “existential threat” posed by Moscow, aligning with the strategic doctrine outlined in the National Strategic Review 2025, emphasizing the direct threat Russia poses to France and its allies.
General Pierre Schill recognizes the complexity of the situation, pointing out that Moscow is not the only threat requiring European intervention. He stresses the need for Europe to address evolving technologies, strategies, and forms of warfare, as crises increasingly unfold without their involvement.
During the Paris Forum for Defense and Strategy, high-ranking officials discussed the need for Western countries to address their technological shortcomings and adapt to new challenges, such as the proliferation of drones. Despite these challenges, General Pierre Schill affirms that the Army is prepared to face all threats.
