President Trump’s Contradictory Statements Raise Concerns

President Trump has once again criticized the refusal of US allies to deploy military resources to secure the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic passage blocked by Iran following American-Israeli attacks. He threatened that the US could disengage from the region.

In recent days, the American president has been increasingly frustrated by the reluctance of major NATO allies such as France and the UK to assist the US in reopening this passage, through which nearly 20% of the world’s crude oil used to flow before the war.

“I wonder what would happen if we ‘finished off’ what remains of the Iranian terrorist state, and left the countries that use it – not us – to be responsible for the so-called ‘strait’? It would prompt some of our ‘inactive allies’ to move, and quickly!!!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social network.

Contradictory Statements

Trump’s statements on this matter have been contradictory. In just one day, he labeled the NATO countries’ refusal to assist the US in securing the Strait of Hormuz as a “really stupid mistake,” then suggested their help wasn’t necessary after all, and finally expressed that Washington “would like some help” in detecting mines there.

Simultaneously, the US military bombed Iranian missile sites near the Strait of Hormuz using bunker-busting bombs, a passage where typically over 20% of liquefied natural gas (LNG) also flows.
