An American submarine crew member, who “needed urgent medical treatment,” was evacuated by the Danish army and transported to the hospital in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, announced the Arctic Command of the Danish army.

The Arctic Command announced on Saturday that it had evacuated a member of an American submarine crew off the coast of Nuuk, the capital of Greenland.

“The Arctic Command evacuated a member of an American submarine crew this afternoon,” the organization said on social media, responsible for monitoring and protecting the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark in the Arctic.

According to the statement, “a crew member needed urgent medical treatment” and was transported to the hospital in Nuuk.

Evacuation carried out by a helicopter

The evacuation was carried out by a “helicopter deployed from the inspection ship Vaedderen,” a Danish frigate stationed in Nuuk and conducting surveillance missions between Greenland and the Faroe Islands, two autonomous territories of Denmark.

Images posted online show the periscope of a submarine emerging in what appears to be the bay of Nuuk, although AFP could not verify their authenticity.

Washington regularly asserts that control of Greenland is essential to U.S. security and accuses Denmark and Europeans of not adequately protecting this strategic area against Russian and Chinese ambitions.

However, Donald Trump backed down from his threats after signing a framework agreement with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, aiming to strengthen American influence and pave the way for talks between Denmark, Greenland, and the United States.
