70,000 files per year: the Air Force will now use AI to recruit

“Every year, there are 4,000 people recruited permanently. This remains an extremely important issue,” said General Philippe Hirtzig, director of human resources for the air and space force, to the AFP. The institution recruits in 50 different fields, from a cook on an air base to a helicopter pilot, he added. The initial selection process based on specific criteria such as age (one must be of legal age to join the army) and nationality (one must be a French citizen, except to join the Foreign Legion) should prioritize the most relevant applications before army recruiters take over and contact candidates directly.

A pre-selection process: Recruitment with the help of AI continues to be debated due to concerns about algorithm biases that can reproduce or amplify discrimination. Thanks to tests conducted in advance, “we can be sure that the biases of artificial intelligence are not discriminatory,” said General Philippe Hirtzig, adding that “sampling checks” will be carried out.

“All our models can be audited,” assured Benjamin Vallat, deputy general manager of Gojob, explaining that safeguards have been put in place to structure data and avoid biases.

This partnership, the amount of which has not been disclosed, allows General Philippe Hirtzig to highlight a “sovereign” solution that meets French and European security certifications and guarantees.”
