Key Points from the War in Ukraine

Event of the Day

Ukraine and Russia have accused each other of violating the ceasefire on the front in Ukraine hundreds of times during the Orthodox Easter. The hostilities cessation began on Saturday at 4 p.m. Volodymyr Zelensky had accepted this ceasefire proposed by his counterpart Vladimir Putin, stating that his country would respond “tit for tat” to any Russian violations.

Today, both armies have mutually attributed hundreds of artillery strikes, drone attacks, especially on civilians, and several infantry attacks.

The Number

2,299. The Ukrainian army staff stated that Russian forces had violated the ceasefire 2,299 times over the Easter weekend. A few minutes later, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported 1,971 violations of this measure by Ukrainian troops.

As a sign of a relative decrease in military activities, the Ukrainian staff reiterated that there were no Russian long-distance drone attacks of the Shahed type, no dropping of guided bombs or missile launches, which are usually almost daily occurrences in Ukraine.

The Trend

Volodymyr Zelensky suggested that it would be “appropriate” to extend the ceasefire initiated during this Easter weekend. However, the Kremlin has ruled out this possibility, unless Kiev agrees to the conditions it has set to end this war triggered by the massive Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

“A lasting peace can only come when we have protected our interests and achieved the goals we set from the beginning. This is possible today, but Zelensky must accept well-known solutions,” said Dmitry Peskov, the Russian presidential spokesman. The Kremlin demands political and territorial concessions from the Ukrainian government, including a complete withdrawal from the eastern region of Donetsk, partially controlled by the Russians. These demands have been rejected by Kiev, which sees them as surrender.
