The United States and Iran have failed to reach an agreement to end the war in the Middle East after marathon negotiations in Islamabad, Vice President JD Vance announced on Sunday. He stated that they were returning to the US after making what he considered to be a “final and best possible offer” to Iran.

Acting as a mediator in the over 20-hour discussions, Pakistan quickly urged both parties to observe a two-week ceasefire, despite the failure to reach a lasting truce agreement. However, there has been no statement from either American or Iranian officials regarding the continuation or discontinuation of the ceasefire, which began on February 28 with the American-Israeli offensive on Iran, resulting in thousands of deaths in the region and ongoing conflict in Lebanon.

Vance expressed disappointment at the lack of a “firm promise” from Tehran to abandon its nuclear weapons program, a demand made by President Donald Trump since the start of the conflict that has disrupted the global economy.

During a brief press conference in Islamabad, Vance declared, “We are returning to the United States without reaching an agreement.” He suggested that Iran may have more to lose from this outcome than the United States.

The Iranian government confirmed the end of the discussions, blaming the failure on the “unreasonable demands” made by the United States, according to Iranian state television.

As Vance highlighted the nuclear issue as the main stumbling block, he did not specifically mention the Strait of Hormuz during his press conference.

The strategic passage for global oil supply from the Gulf has been effectively blocked by Iran since the conflict began, creating ripple effects on the world economy, including shortages and price hikes.

The complexity of the problems and conditions surrounding the negotiations was acknowledged by the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, noting that new topics like the Strait of Hormuz and regional issues were introduced during the talks.

Despite ongoing negotiations, US military forces reported that two destroyers successfully navigated the strait as part of a pre-mining operation.

The Islamic Republic of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard warned on Sunday that they would take “severe action” against military ships passing through the strait, regardless of any agreement reached. Donald Trump also expressed indifference to the outcome of the negotiations, stating that the US military had already defeated Iran.
