War in the Middle East: Kurdish armed groups now involved in conflict after Iranian strikes

On the ground, the war continues to spread. There have been recent strikes on Iran and the Gulf countries. Qatar, for example, announced intercepting a missile attack on Lebanon, but now the Kurds are also involved in this conflict.

The Iranian regime claimed on Thursday to have fired three missiles at Kurdish Iranian party bases in Iraqi Kurdistan. A source within one of these parties estimates that Tehran has carried out 30 drone or missile attacks against Kurdish militants since Saturday.

One of these strikes killed a fighter in Iraqi Kurdistan on Wednesday in the province of Erbil. On the other side of the border, American and Israeli bombings are increasing on regime positions. These strikes could potentially weaken Iran before a possible ground offensive by Kurdish fighters from Iraq.

However, can the Kurds really launch a military operation against the regime? Several American media outlets, including CNN with the support of the CIA, suggest this possibility. But this information has been denied by the White House. Iranian Kurdish parties also claim that their troops have no intention of taking military action in Iran. These historically divided groups formed a coalition about ten days ago.

It is unknown how many fighters they have, but they are outnumbered against the Islamic Republic and cannot act without the approval of the regional government of Iraqi Kurdistan. Its president, Nechirvan Barzani, has received calls in recent days from Donald Trump, Emmanuel Macron, the Turkish Foreign Minister, and the Iranian Foreign Minister, implying intense negotiations are underway.
