The French military programming law foresees a historical increase in the French defense budget, rising to 76.3 billion euros by 2030. Nuclear, missiles, and drones are becoming the pillars of an enhanced strategic autonomy strategy.

France plans for an additional 36 billion euros in defense spending by 2030, as part of the update to its military programming law. This includes strengthening the nuclear arsenal, missile stocks, and drones.

This increase represents an acceleration compared to the current annual 3 billion euro increase in military spending, reflecting growing security pressures related to conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.

It also considers the increasing uncertainty regarding U.S. commitments to NATO under the presidency of Donald Trump, who recently threatened to leave the Alliance.

The updated law for the period 2024-2030 aims to raise defense spending to 2.5% of the GDP by the end of the decade, compared to around 2% currently.

The budget is projected to reach 76.3 billion euros by 2030, almost double its 2017 level.

Last year, NATO, influenced by Donald Trump, increased the target for defense spending from 2% to 5% of the national GDP for member countries by 2035.

“The profound and abrupt evolution of international balances now requires us to go faster and stronger,” said Defense Minister Catherine Vautrin.

France acknowledges the shift towards sustained and multifaceted conflict globally.

Context: France is planning to increase its defense budget significantly in response to changing international tensions and security threats.

Fact Check: The plans include boosting nuclear capabilities, missile stocks, and investments in conventional military capabilities.
