French President’s Statement on Ceasefire Agreement with Iran amid Israeli Attacks in Lebanon

This statement by the president of the Republic comes as Israel has carried out multiple attacks on Lebanon this Wednesday, resulting in 182 deaths and 890 injuries.

President Emmanuel Macron expressed hope on Wednesday, April 8th that the ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran “will be fully respected”, stating that this also applies “to Lebanon” after talking with Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian and American President Donald Trump.

“I expressed my hope that the ceasefire will be fully respected by each of the belligerents, on all confrontation sites, including in Lebanon. This is a necessary condition for this ceasefire to be credible and enduring,” he wrote on X.

Far from the two-week truce announced between the United States and Iran, Israel conducted strikes on Lebanon on Wednesday on a scale not seen since the beginning of the war, resulting in 182 deaths and 890 injuries, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health.

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam also declared a national day of mourning on Thursday.

“Any agreement must provide answers”

Emmanuel Macron also indicated that “any agreement must provide answers to the concerns raised by Iran’s nuclear and ballistic programs,” as well as in terms of “its regional policy and measures to obstruct navigation in the Strait of Hormuz,” which has been reopened as part of the temporary ceasefire.

President Donald Trump later affirmed that the ceasefire agreement with Iran does not concern Lebanon, confirming remarks made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Hezbollah, which had not claimed responsibility for strikes on Israel since the night before, stated that it has the “right to respond” to the bloody attacks.

Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian stated that a ceasefire in Lebanon is one of the “essential conditions” outlined in his ten-point plan, the basis of the truce with the United States.
