An agreement was reached just minutes before the expiration of the ultimatum set by President Trump to Iran for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, under the threat of destruction. Israel clarified that the ceasefire did not include Lebanon.

Less than an hour and twenty minutes. That was the short amount of time remaining before the ultimatum given by Donald Trump to Iran expired, as the American president threatened to wipe out “an entire civilization” if the regime of the mullahs did not allow the safe passage of commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz. The two countries ultimately reached a last-minute ceasefire agreement on Tuesday night after Pakistan, a mediator in the conflict, urged Washington to postpone the American ultimatum for two weeks.

The president, who had left the possibility of massive strikes against Iranian infrastructure until the last moment, grandly announced the suspension of hostilities, arguing that the United States had already “achieved and surpassed all our military objectives.” This agreement, concluded definitively, remains unclear as to the inclusion of Lebanon in the ceasefire – the country, embroiled in the war in the Middle East after attacks by the pro-Iranian Hezbollah group on Israeli territory, would be covered by the truce according to Pakistan, a claim contradicted by the Israeli state.

Trump has now accepted to postpone his threat of a devastating attack on Iran by two weeks, stating: “I agree to suspend bombings and attacks against Iran for two weeks, provided that the Islamic Republic of Iran accepts the TOTAL, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz.” The American president announced that he had received a ten-point plan from Iran, which he considers “a viable working basis” for negotiation, aiming to finalize and conclude a long-term peace agreement within the two-week deadline.
