The President calls a National Security Council meeting

Emmanuel Macron will convene a council of defense and national security ministers and officials on Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. to discuss the “situation in Iran and the Middle East,” the Élysée announced on Tuesday evening. This meeting comes as U.S. President Donald Trump threatened on Tuesday to “eradicate an entire civilization” at the end of his ultimatum, and as Iran stated it is “ready for all scenarios.”

On the 39th day of the war in the Middle East, triggered by a joint Israeli-American attack on Iran, bridges, railways, and a highway were targeted on Tuesday in that country. Donald Trump also gave Iran until 8:00 p.m. Washington time (midnight GMT) to restore navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, vital for global oil supplies.

UN warning

These remarks have been viewed as possibly opening the door to the use of nuclear weapons by the United States, an eventuality that the White House has denied. “No military objective justifies the massive destruction of a society’s infrastructure or inflicting such suffering on civilian populations intentionally,” said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, “very concerned” about the statements made by the U.S. president.
