Trump Ultimatum to Iran Ends with Attacks on Infrastructure

The ultimatum issued by Donald Trump expired at the end of the day. The American president threatened to strike essential infrastructures in Iran if the situation in the Strait of Hormuz was not resolved by Tuesday, April 7, at 8 p.m. in Washington (2 a.m. in Paris). As the deadline approached, several bridges in Iran were reportedly targeted.

The American ultimatum is coming to an end as tensions escalate. Trump had warned Iran of retaliatory strikes on its essential infrastructure if the situation in the strait was not resolved before 8 p.m. Washington time (2 a.m. Paris time) on Tuesday, April 7. However, by early afternoon, there seemed to be no change in the situation, and Iranian infrastructures were reportedly hit. “A few minutes ago, one of the bridges on the outskirts of the city of Qom in the western province was attacked by American and Israeli enemy projectiles,” said Vice Governor Morteza Heydari on state television, as reported by La Croix.

A second bridge was hit less than an hour later, around 1 p.m. Paris time. It is located in Kashan, south of Tehran: “A few minutes ago, the American-Zionist enemy aggressor attacked the railway bridge of Yahya Abad in the city of Kashan,” declared Akbar Salehi, vice governor of Isfahan province. He added, “Two people were martyred, and three others were injured.”

“Multiple Explosions” on Kharg Island

Several American media outlets, mainly Fox News, also reported that dozens of strikes were carried out on Kharg Island. Located in the Gulf, it is considered the nerve center of the oil industry. “The American-Zionist enemy has carried out multiple attacks on Kharg Island (southwest), and several explosions were heard there,” reported the Iranian news agency Mehr.

Our colleagues across the Atlantic claim that the strikes targeted military installations, as well as docking platforms used by supertankers to fill up with oil. The strikes on these platforms were said to be unintentional. However, the Wall Street Journal reported that in private, Donald Trump no longer believed in the diplomatic track for this war. Meanwhile, Doha “urges all parties to find a way to end this war before it is too late.”
