War in Iran: Elected officials from the American presidential party stand up against threats from Donald Trump.

On Wednesday, April 8, at 2 am Paris time, Donald Trump’s ultimatum to Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz comes to an end. The American president has become increasingly threatening since Monday. “An entire civilization will die tonight,” he wrote on his social network. Some elected officials from his own party, the Republicans, are advising Donald Trump to show restraint, especially towards Iranian civilians.

“I pray that these are just empty words”

The Republican camp does not rise up as one man to defy Donald Trump, far from it, but some elected officials are uncomfortable a few hours before possible strikes against bridges or power plants in Iran. Senator Ron Johnson supports war and yet, in an interview with right-wing host John Solomon, he fears that Trump may go too far this time. “I’ll be honest, I hope and pray that these are just empty words. I don’t want us to destroy civilian infrastructure, I don’t want that, we are not at war with the Iranian people.”

Another dissenting voice in the Trump camp is host Tucker Carlson. He has been opposed to war with Iran from the beginning and has hardened his stance. He commented on Trump’s message on Sunday calling the Iranians “a bunch of morons.” “It’s despicable from any point of view.”
