President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine has expressed concerns over the potential impact of a prolonged war between the United States and Israel against Iran on further weakening American support for Ukraine.
During an exclusive interview in Istanbul with the Associated Press, Zelensky stated that Ukraine desperately needs more American-made Patriot air defense systems to help counter daily shelling from Russia. The constant shelling by Russia behind the front line since the large-scale invasion of Ukraine over four years ago has resulted in the deaths of thousands of civilians.
Zelensky also highlighted the targeting of Ukraine’s energy supply by Russia to disrupt the production of drones and missiles developed by the country, while also depriving civilians of heating and running water in winter.
“We have to recognize that we are not the priority today,” stated Zelensky. “That is why I fear a long war (in Iran) will bring us less support.”
Recent negotiations mediated by the United States between Moscow and Kyiv ended in February with no sign of a breakthrough. Despite ongoing discussions, Zelensky acknowledged a general neglect towards Ukraine.
One immediate concern is the need for Patriots to intercept Russian ballistic missiles, as Ukraine currently lacks an effective alternative. Zelensky voiced worries about the insufficient delivery of these American systems and emphasized the importance of a speedy end to the war in Iran to safeguard Ukraine’s diminishing support.
In response to the economic repercussions of the war in Iran, Ukraine is intensifying drone attacks on Russian oil facilities, unsettling Moscow.
To maintain Ukraine’s international presence, Zelensky proposed sharing Ukraine’s combat experience to develop effective countermeasures against Iranian attacks. This includes the rapid innovation of low-cost interceptor drones to combat enemy drones. Zelensky also positioned Ukraine as a potential partner in protecting global trade routes.
Looking towards future agreements, Zelensky is working on new defense arrangements to be signed soon with Turkey following talks with President Erdogan. Zelensky also announced plans for an official visit to Syria in collaboration with Turkey.
Despite Russia’s ongoing efforts, Ukraine remains prepared for a potential new offensive. The undermanned Ukrainian defenders are gearing up for a larger Russian army offensive along the front line. Zelensky reiterated Ukraine’s stance on territorial compromise and emphasized that territorial concessions are not a priority.
In ongoing drone attacks, casualties were reported in Nikopol and Odessa in Ukraine, underscoring the escalating tensions in the region.
