Steven Berghuis defended Oscar Gloukh. The Israeli was recruited for about fifteen million euros in Amsterdam, but is far from having a starting position at Ajax.
During the press conference after the match against FC Twente (defeat 1-2), Berghuis tempered the criticism of Gloukh. “Take Gloukh as an example: he was recruited to play in a certain way. At a certain point, this style of play is abandoned.”
The experienced Ajax player believes that Gloukh does not thrive in the style of play of the Amsterdammers. “Then we start playing differently. We start evolving with five defenders, leaving only two midfielders, and that’s not Gloukh’s profile.”
“But this kid simply knows how to play football well, but it doesn’t fit the way we want to play,” Berghuis admits. “And that’s why I think the players are below their level and as a team, we are simply insufficient.”
Oscar Garcia recently succeeded interim coach Fred Grim, but has not yet been able to reverse the trend. “Of course, we are doing our best to finish as high as possible. I am grateful for the energy that Garcia and his staff are trying to put in to prepare us and push us,” compliments Berghuis the Spaniard, who also sees the challenges of the coaching position at Ajax.
<p"Every staff that has been in charge of the group this season has done everything and tried everything. However, we just can't materialize it and that is evident every time," concludes the captain of the current fifth team in the VriendenLoterij Eredivisie.
