Third round of talks between the US and Iran to open in Geneva

  • On Thursday, a third cycle of talks between the United States and Iran will begin in Geneva.
  • Tehran and Washington will once again attempt to reach an agreement on the Iranian nuclear program.

New round of discussions this Thursday. American negotiators, along with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his delegation, arrived in Geneva on Wednesday, February 25, ahead of the third round of talks between Washington and Tehran scheduled for Thursday.

Despite Donald Trump’s comments on Tuesday before Congress about the “sinister nuclear ambitions” of Iran, the United States express optimism about reaching an agreement to ensure that Tehran does not acquire atomic weapons. “The president has many other tools at his disposal to ensure that Iran does not acquire the atomic bomb,” said Vice President JD Vance on Fox News, concluding: “He has shown he is ready to use them, and I hope the Iranians take that seriously in tomorrow’s negotiations.”

“Big lies”

Tehran has outright rejected the allegations made by the American president, stating that everything the United States claims about the Iranian nuclear program, “from Iran’s ballistic missiles” to “the number of casualties during the January unrest,” is nothing but a repetition of big lies, according to the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Esma’il Baghaei, in a statement on X.

Western countries and Israel, considered by experts as the sole nuclear power in the Middle East, suspect Iran of seeking to acquire nuclear weapons. Tehran denies such ambitions but insists on its right to develop a civilian nuclear program under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), to which it is a signatory.

As the United States have already deployed a massive presence in the Gulf region, the Department of the Treasury in Washington has imposed new sanctions against four Iranians, companies, and twelve ships, aimed at weakening the Islamic Republic.

The two enemy countries resumed dialogue on February 6 through Omani mediation. Their previous talks were abruptly halted by the war triggered in June 2025 by an Israeli attack, to which Washington joined by bombing Iranian nuclear sites.
