Several American media outlets reported on Friday, March 20, that the US army would deploy additional troops to the Middle East as part of the conflict between the country led by Donald Trump and Iran.
The US army will deploy additional troops to the Middle East, belonging to the Marine Corps, as reported by American media on Friday, March 20. This could hint at a possible ground operation in Iran after three weeks of war.
These reports come as Axios stated that President Donald Trump and his administration are considering seizing control of Kharg Island, from where about 90% of Iran’s oil exports depart, in order to force Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a mission that may be entrusted to the Marines.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Washington will send between 2,200 and 2,500 Marines to the region, based in California and capable of conducting amphibious operations. CNN, citing anonymous military sources, also stated that thousands of Marines and sailors would be sent to the area.
The Marine Corps, when asked about these press reports, simply replied that the units in question were “deployed at sea.” American media had already announced last week another deployment to the Middle East of three ships and 2,500 Marines, based in Japan.
