In the United States, who can stop Donald Trump?

The second term of Donald Trump is experiencing an acceleration in imperialist interventionism and inflationist measures that are harmful to rights and freedoms. Tariffs, questioning the Paris Agreement on climate, environmental setbacks, denial and rewriting of history, repression of academic and artistic freedoms, and a crackdown on migrants are just a few examples of his controversial policies. Despite his unpopularity, Trump seems unstoppable in leading the world’s foremost power. However, resistance efforts are being organized and achieving success, such as in New York with Zohran Mamdani’s victory.

“Trump is leading a policy of war and lawlessness. How can we explain the impunity he so often enjoys?” asks Charlotte Recoquillon, a geopolitical expert and specialist on the United States. She points out that this did not happen overnight, as the groundwork was laid during his first term, with extensive planning leading up to his second term and the Project 2025 planning a power takeover and government restructuring.

Part of the reason for Trump’s impunity, according to Recoquillon, is his grip on institutions and government operations through loyalists strategically placed in key positions. Despite representing a minority of Americans, these loyalists wield disproportionate power due to a long-term strategy implemented by Trump and his inner circle.

Cole Stangler, a journalist and author, highlights that Trump has absolute support from the Republican Party. The turning point was the failed attempt at a coup on January 6, 2021, where Trump and his supporters tried to overturn the presidential election results. A majority of Republican representatives in Congress refused to certify the election results, along with several senators. Think tanks and influential networks within Republican circles were already preparing for Trump’s second term.

These events paint a picture of a political landscape where Trump’s controversial policies and actions are met with both support and resistance, ultimately shaping the future of the United States.
