“The Taliban continue to resort to terrorist methods, kidnapping people for ransom or to obtain political concessions,” denounced the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, in a statement.
The United States formally blacklisted Afghanistan as a country practicing “unjust detentions” on Monday, announced the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio. “The Taliban continue to resort to terrorist methods, kidnapping people for ransom or to obtain political concessions. These heinous tactics must stop,” he declared in a statement.
“It is not safe for Americans to travel to Afghanistan, as the Taliban continue to unjustly detain our fellow citizens and other foreign nationals,” added the Secretary of State. He called on the Taliban authorities to release American citizens Dennis Coyle and Mahmoud Habibi, as well as “all Americans unjustly detained in Afghanistan.”

Mahmoud Habibi, a businessman, has been held in Afghanistan since August 2022, according to the State Department. American researcher Dennis Coyle, on the other hand, was arrested in January 2025 by Afghan authorities, according to the Foley Foundation, an organization advocating for the release of Americans taken hostage or arbitrarily detained abroad.
