Talks with Israel outside US

The Lebanon aims to clearly separate its dossier from the ongoing discussions between the US and Iran. This is the message conveyed by the Lebanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Youssef Rajji during an exchange with his German counterpart Johann Wadephul, as direct negotiations with Israel loom. According to Youssef Rajji, these talks aim to achieve a ceasefire with Israel and demonstrate Beirut’s intent to pursue an independent approach. The Lebanese foreign minister emphasizes that this process effectively reinforces the separation between the Lebanese issue and the broader discussions involving Tehran and Washington.

This stance comes after negotiations held in Pakistan, during which Iran reportedly demanded the cessation of Israeli strikes against the terrorist organization Hezbollah as a condition for an agreement with the US. Beirut sees this demand as an attempt to link the different fronts of the conflict.

In this context, Youssef Rajji reiterates that the Lebanese state is the only authorized entity to negotiate on its behalf, sending an implicit message to Iran and Hezbollah. This is a way to reaffirm national sovereignty and place official diplomacy at the heart of the country’s strategic decisions.
