War in Iran: Trump announces that the United States will set up a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz

Donald Trump ordered on Sunday, April 12th, an American naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, accusing Iran of refusing to abandon its nuclear ambitions, after direct talks between the two sides in Islamabad failed to end the war in the Middle East.

While he stated that the discussions, lasting over 20 hours, had gone “well” and that “most points had been agreed upon,” the American president declared on his Truth Social platform that Tehran had refused to compromise on the nuclear issue. He reiterated his readiness to strike Iranian energy infrastructure in the absence of an agreement.

The United States justified the offensive launched with Israel on February 28th, which triggered a regional war with thousands of casualties, mainly in Iran and Lebanon, and shook the global economy, by accusing Iran of seeking to acquire nuclear weapons – a claim denied by Tehran.

The United States will begin a “BLOCKADE process of all ships attempting to enter or exit the Strait of Hormuz” through which a portion of global oil, gas, and fertilizer transits, the American president wrote in his first reaction to the announcement of the failed negotiations. However, he provided no details on the operation’s specifics, as Iran has controlled this strategic passage since the beginning of the war.

The Revolutionary Guards warned of trapping their enemies in a “deadly spiral,” claiming to have “completely under control” the strait’s traffic.

Iran has de facto established passage rights to cross it and intends to maintain them. After initially considering the idea, Donald Trump warned Iran on April 9th against implementing any toll, an option deemed “unacceptable” by the European Union and divisive in the Gulf.

On April 11th, the U.S. military stated that two of its destroyers had crossed the strait in a pre-clearance operation for their demining. According to MarineTraffic tracking data, an American warship crossed the strait, while hundreds of merchant vessels remain stranded in the Gulf.
