A loud explosion rang out on Saturday night into Sunday morning outside the United States embassy in Oslo, announced the Norwegian police. This explosion took place around 01:00 (00:00 GMT), said the police, adding that they currently have no information about its origin. According to the commander of police operations, Michael Delmer, speaking to the public broadcaster NRK, the explosion hit the entrance to the consulate section of the embassy.

“The damage is minor,” stated Mr. Delmer. “We will not comment on the nature of the damage, what exploded, or other similar details, beyond the fact that there was an explosion,” he added. He mentioned, “the investigation is in its early stages.” A significant police presence was deployed around the embassy.

US embassies on highest alert level

A 16-year-old resident of the neighborhood, identified only by his first name, Edvard, told TV2 that he heard the explosion while watching TV. “My mother and I first thought it came from our house, so we looked around, but then we saw flashing lights outside the window and a crowd of police,” he said. “There were police dogs, drones, officers with automatic weapons, and helicopters in the air,” he added.

US embassies have been placed on highest alert level in the Middle East due to American military operations in Iran, and several of them have been targeted in attacks, with Tehran retaliating against industrial and diplomatic targets. However, the police have not provided any indication that the incident near the embassy in Oslo is linked to the war in the Middle East.
