JD Vance expressed disappointment at the lack of a “firm promise” from Tehran to abandon its nuclear weapons program. No one, neither American nor Iranian, has spoken about whether the current truce will continue or not.
After nearly 21 hours of negotiations that did not yield results, the United States and Iran failed to reach an agreement to end the war in the Middle East. Vice President JD Vance, who was mediating after over 20 hours of discussions, stated that they are returning to the United States without reaching an agreement. He called it a bad news for Iran more than the United States.
The US Vice President highlighted the need for a firm commitment from Iran not to develop nuclear weapons in the long term. He emphasized the importance of this commitment in the failure of the discussions. Iran cited unreasonable demands from the US as the reason for the discussions ending.
The Iran-US talks also touched on the issue of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage blocked by Iran since the conflict began, affecting global oil supply and prices. JD Vance did not explicitly mention the issue during his press conference.
Both the US and Iran brought influential figures to the negotiations, including the special envoy and the foreign minister from both sides. Iran mentioned the complexity surrounding the negotiations, including additional issues like the Strait of Hormuz.
The US military confirmed the passage of two destroyers through the Strait as part of a pre-clearance operation. Donald Trump expressed readiness for military action if necessary. After six weeks of conflict, thousands have died in the Middle East, mainly in Iran and Lebanon.
Israel conducted deadly strikes in Lebanon, with the conflict intensifying. Talks are expected between Lebanon and Israel in Washington, although Hezbollah has rejected them. Netanyahu expressed a desire for a long-lasting peace agreement.
