These remarks come as NATO chief Mark Rutte is preparing to meet Donald Trump, who is threatening to leave the Atlantic Alliance.
Central Military Role
Before the scheduled meeting at 3:30 p.m. (9:30 p.m. in France) at the White House, NATO Secretary-General met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Their discussions focused on military operations against Iran, the war in Ukraine, and strengthening coordination and the “transfer of burdens” with NATO allies, according to a statement from State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott.
The United States has held a central military role within NATO since its establishment in 1949 but last year secured a significant increase in defense spending from other Alliance members by 2035. In the face of Donald Trump, Mark Rutte will once again have to rely on his personal relationship with the U.S. president to try to appease his harsh criticisms of the organization.
