During his visit to Japan and South Korea from March 31st to April 1st, Emmanuel Macron expressed his desire to form a “coalition of independents” in response to the unpredictability of his American counterpart and China’s dominance in the region. This “third way” remains highly symbolic for now.

“It is necessary to be serious. When we want to be serious, we do not say the opposite of what we said the day before,” said Emmanuel Macron during his visit to South Korea last week, barely concealing his annoyance towards his American counterpart. The French president had strategic autonomy at the forefront of his mind.

On Friday, April 3rd, as his Asian tour concluded in Japan, he reiterated his ambition for a “third way” for France, confronting the “dominance” of China and the “unpredictability” of Donald Trump. He decided to call this third way “the coalition of independents”. The objective is to unite France, and more broadly European countries, with medium powers that share our taste for democratic values, the United Nations Charter, and the defense of international law.
