Amnesty International has called on the United Kingdom government to end its military support for the United States in the escalating conflict with Iran, specifically by withdrawing American forces’ access to British military bases, stating that recent threats by American leaders pose serious risks to civilians.
In a press release, Kristyan Benedict, Crisis Response Director for Amnesty International UK, declared that the situation is “a moment of extreme danger for civilians in Iran and across the region.”
Referring to comments made today by President Trump, he warned that the remarks by American political leaders such as “an entire civilization will die tonight” reflect a “hate speech” and that the UK must “urgently end military support for the United States that could enable international crimes, including war crimes.”
“An American strike has already killed over 168 people, including over 100 children, at a school in Minab, Iran. Bridges and energy infrastructure are being bombed. Allowing the United States to use British military bases does not exist in a vacuum, it carries heavy responsibilities in terms of human rights,” he added.
“Amnesty International is categorical: threatening to systematically destroy civilian infrastructure is a threat to commit war crimes,” Benedict declared. “Attacking essential power plants crucial to the survival of tens of millions of civilians would be illegal. The UK must be equally categorical.”
Trump has threatened to bomb power plants and bridges across Iran if Tehran does not reopen the Strait of Hormuz and reach an agreement by Tuesday night at 8 pm (12 am GMT Wednesday).
The region has been on high alert since Israel and the United States launched an offensive against Iran on February 28, killing over 1,400 people, including the former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Tehran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting American military forces, causing human casualties, infrastructure damage, and disrupting global markets and aviation.
