A small plane made an emergency landing on a Pennsylvania highway Saturday morning, causing traffic congestion during this holiday weekend, according to our CBS colleagues.
The aircraft, a 1995 Commander 114B, had taken off from Solberg, New Jersey, for a flight to Indiana shortly after 9 a.m. when the 65-year-old pilot experienced an engine problem. The pilot tried to reach a local airport but eventually landed on the highway, between two cars, as shown in the footage from the onboard camera of the driver behind. Neither he nor his 34-year-old passenger were injured. A fuel leak is believed to have caused the engine failure.
“It was probably the best possible outcome for an incident like this,” said Justin Oswald, the county fire chief. The plane was towed to a local airport. The highway reopened around 1 p.m. Oswald emphasized that firefighters must always be prepared for anything, even an airplane landing on a busy highway. “This is not the usual scenario we work on during our training days. So, I am very proud of the team,” he concluded.
