Thierry Breton, the former European commissioner, criticized Ursula von der Leyen’s lack of firmness towards Donald Trump on Sunday, April 5. Breton expressed his concerns about the European Union’s need to learn from a world where trust-based relationships no longer exist. In an interview with RTL, he condemned Von der Leyen for speaking too much with Trump.
Breton, a former European commissioner for the internal market, reiterated his criticisms of the President of the European Commission, this time focusing on her lack of firmness against Trump. He lamented that Von der Leyen had listened to Trump too much at the expense of EU interests.
Despite his criticisms, Breton believes that the EU should not end its relationship with Trump as the United States remains an ally. He emphasized the need for the EU to arm itself to balance the US-Europe relationship in a world where trust-based relationships no longer work.
Breton also criticized Donald Trump’s communication regarding the war in the Middle East, particularly his threats towards Iran. He denounced Trump’s rhetoric, stating that every few days, a new turn in the war seems imminent whenever Trump speaks.
