RACIT – As the Trump Administration continues its policy of mass deportations, individuals detained by immigration police are suffering from poor detention conditions and a lack of medical assistance.

Emmanuel Damas died from an untreated dental infection. He was arrested in September by ICE, the immigration police, and transferred to a detention center in Arizona. In February, this 56-year-old Haitian who arrived in the United States in 2024 under a legal program started to suffer from a toothache. Despite increasing pain, he did not receive a dentist visit. He was simply given paracetamol and an anti-inflammatory. After several days, his condition worsened, and this father of two children ended up in the emergency room, where doctors tried to stop the spreading infection. Nine days after his hospital admission, his family was finally allowed to see him. He was in a coma and passed away the next day.

In total, 14 people have died since the beginning of the year after being placed in detention by immigration police. In 2025, 33 people have lost their lives.
